The GLC 300d Coupé takes the best of the very popular GLC 300d and transmogrifies it into a sleek fusion of SUV functionality and coupé-style elegance. There is also a less powerful 220d as well as AMG versions with dreadnought levels of torque…

WHY THIS?

If you’re looking for a vehicle that strikes a balance between practicality and panache, the GLC 300d Coupé delivers. Yes, it isn’t as practical as the squarer GLC from whence it comes, but its all about what you need and what you want, just like work and life.

OUTSIDE

The defining feature of the GLC Coupé may be its sporty silhouette, but don’t let that fool you into thinking this car isn’t spacious or eminently functional. The GLC 300d Coupé makes a bold statement wherever it goes with its sloping roofline, muscular wheel arches, and chrome detailing, while the LED headlamps with distinctive daytime running lights add to its presence. If you opt for the 20-inch alloy wheels and AMG Line styling, the car is instantly elevated to another level of good-looking.

INSIDE

Step into the cabin and you’re greeted by an interior that oozes luxury – just what you’d expect from a Merc. With cars of this standard, it’s not about the standard features as much as it is about the experience of being in there – the materials used, the small touches that add impact to the whole. It’s the soft leather upholstery, the brushed aluminium trim, every element thoughtfully designed to appeal to the senses.

There’s still loads of tech packed in there, though, like the “Hey Mercedes” feature, where you can chat away to your Merc instead of pressing buttons and scrolling through menus. This car really does have it all.

THE DRIVE

A 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine is paired with a 48V battery system to form a mild hybrid unit that produces 180kW and 500Nm of torque for smooth and effortless power, ensuring brisk acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency. The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system guarantees traction on a variety of terrains, while the ride is supremely comfortable, especially if you opt for the air suspension that adjusts to road conditions.

In town, the GLC feels agile and responsive, while on the open road it offers a quiet, composed drive. With a combined fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km, it’s also remarkably efficient for its class. Safety features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera add to your confidence behind the wheel.

FINAL WORD

Every major car maker seems to offer an SUV Coupé, even though the shape is not as practical as a true SUV should be. That said, many people are prepared to sacrifice a little space for the aesthetic, be it a Suzuki Fronx/Toyota Starlet Cross, an Audi Q3 Sportback or this handsome fella here.

It’s a fantastic overall package, and a great reminder that excellent diesel engines deliver where it counts – loads of usable torque and real-world fuel economy.
