Traditional scams such as phishing, smishing, and vishing have also evolved. With the help of AI, they now replicate natural tone and language with unsettling accuracy. Reddy adds that synthetic identity fraud – where fraudsters combine real data with fabricated details – is growing rapidly. Entirely fictitious personas can bypass onboarding systems, creating scalable and difficult-to-detect fraud.
Fake e-commerce storefronts and fraudulent insurance claims are also entering the mix, often bolstered by AI-generated product videos and supporting documentation.
Why AI makes scams so convincing
According to Reddy, “AI tools are elevating scams to new levels of sophistication by producing hyper-realistic content that is nearly indistinguishable from genuine communication.”
Deepfakes can replicate subtle emotional cues, while chatbots and cloned voices engage in real-time conversations, adapting dynamically to a victim’s responses. This ability to personalise deception is what makes AI scams so effective. By scraping social media and breached data, scammers profile targets, tailoring their attacks to individual habits, spending patterns, or life events.
“The result is scalable, efficient fraud operations that can target thousands of individuals simultaneously,” Reddy warns.
“We want to believe,” says Anna Collard, senior vice-president of content strategy at KnowBe4 Africa. Scammers know that their success depends on triggering emotions that override critical thinking. A message claiming you’ve won the lottery or are in serious trouble with tax authorities is designed to make you act instinctively, without pausing to verify its legitimacy.
Criminals exploit our natural tendency to believe what aligns with our emotions, particularly when content is emotionally charged. Videos of roadside grave markers or images of children stranded during floods, for example, evoke fear or empathy. Our reactions are often shaped by personal experiences and worldviews: normal responses that our brains have evolved to process efficiently.
“We have cognitive biases that help us make sense of the world,” explains Collard. “If we applied critical thinking to everything that triggers us, it would be exhausting. Instead, we rely on heuristics, mental shortcuts, that conserve energy. From a survival perspective, this makes sense, but it also leaves us vulnerable to manipulation.”
Some reactions are instinctual, but scammers also exploit the power of repetition. Known as the mere exposure effect, repeated exposure to false information increases the likelihood that we’ll believe it, especially if it’s something we want to be true. Quick action here can safeguard your assets, protect your credit score, and minimise potential losses. Many financial institutions also have dedicated fraud hotlines and recovery teams trained to respond to emerging AI-driven scams.
- Law enforcement and national cybercrime bodies
Report the incident to local police and, where possible, to specialised agencies such as cybercrime units. In South Africa, this includes the South African Police Service Cybercrime Division and the Information Regulator under POPIA. Internationally, bodies like the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center track patterns and assist with prosecution. Beyond law enforcement, the consumer protection bodies, telecom regulators, and financial ombuds services that track scams and advocate for victims are essential to minimising AI fraud. In South Africa, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) and Consumer Goods and Services Ombud are examples of channels worth contacting.
